What is Pericardial Mesothelioma?

Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest type of the three forms of mesothelioma. It makes up less than 10% of all mesothelioma patients. Approximately 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year, but fewer than 200 of them are pericardial. As with the other mesotheliomas, it is caused by exposure to asbestos. This type affects the pericardium, the protective sac that covers the heart and provides lubrication so that it can beat properly. Because it is so rare, there is little specific research on this disease, and it is still not clearly understood how the asbestos fibers become lodged in the pericardium.

Symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are similar to other forms of mesothelioma, although its rarity has made it difficult for specialists to determine a specific set of common symptoms. Heart palpitations are more common with this form of mesothelioma than with the others. Additionally, patients may experience difficulty breathing, fever, and cough.

Diagnosis of pericardial mesothelioma is problematic, as the nature of its symptoms is relatively non-specific, in that they can appear as a result of several other cardiac conditions. Unfortunately for most patients, by the time symptoms of the disease appear, the cancer has progressed to a stage where conventional treatments are largely ineffective for anything other than providing temporary relief of symptoms.

As a direct consequence of the difficulties in definitively diagnosing pericardial mesothelioma, and the fact that it is usually only minimally symptomatic until its advanced stages, the prognosis for patients is very poor, with a mean survival time of only six months following diagnosis.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an extremely nasty and permanent cancer that infects the membrane surrounding most internal organs. It is also a very subtle form of cancer providing only a few noticeable symptoms until it becomes extremely advanced. The most common type of mesothelioma is called pleural mesothelioma. It causes shortness of breath and/or chronic coughing that can easily be mixed up with allergies or a common cold. In many cases mesothelioma is discovered by accident when patients are looking into these symptoms. Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

-Chest Pain
-Chronic coughing that worsens over time
-Shortness of breath
-Coughing up blood
-Fatigue
-Wheezing
-Lung infection
-Swollen lymph nodes
-Loss of appetite and weight loss

75% of all mesothelioma cases are Pleural mesothelioma. Another type is called Peritoneal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines and can be just as dangerous and deadly. Symptoms of Peritoneal mesothelioma include:

-Pain or swelling in the abdomen
-Weight loss
-Bowel obstruction – blockage in the small / large intestine
-Anemia – reduction in number of red blood cells
-Fever

High risk groups such as asbestos and construction workers must undergo frequent check-ups to monitor any conditions leading to mesothelioma. Because this cancer is so deadly, early diagnosis and treatment can help prolong life, but the mortality rate is usually 100% within five years.

Mesothelioma Symptoms: A Guide

Mesothelioma is considered to be one of the deadliest and rarest kinds of cancer. It develops cancerous or malignant cells in the mesothelium. Mesothelium is a protective cell which covers mostly many internal body organs. They can also damage other organs in your body by spreading the damaged cells to other parts or organs.

The various types of mesothelioma are Pleural Mesothelioma, Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Pericardial Mesothelioma. Pleura are the membrane which covers the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity. Most of the organs in the abdominal cavity are covered by the peritoneum. Pericardial mesothelioma starts from the cavity which surrounds the heart. The abnormal proliferation of these cells causes this rare form of cancer.

Mesothelioma starts in tiny lumps in the membrane of pleura. This may not be shown on scans or x-rays until they are grown up large. Mesothelioma is developed mainly in the person who inhales the asbestos particles - the major cause for this disease. The symptoms may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to the asbestos particles. In the case of pleural mesothelioma, shortness of breath and chest pain due to the accumulated fluid in the pleura are the major symptoms. Continuous cough and hoarse voice are also considered as other major symptoms in pleural mesothelioma. Abdominal pain, weight loss and swelling in the abdominal region due to a buildup of fluid are the major symptoms in peritoneal mesothelioma.

Symptoms like bowel obstruction, abnormality in the blood clotting, fever, and anemia are a few of the peritoneal symptoms. Pain, trouble swallowing or swelling of the neck or face is the common symptom that is found when the cancer spreads beyond the mesothelium to other organs in the body. The common symptoms of the pericardial mesothelioma are persistent coughing, palpitations, shortness of breath and chest pain. It is very important to see a doctor for the further immediate diagnosis during these symptoms occurs.

Mesothelioma Prognosis: A Difficult Challenge to Face

Mesothelioma prognosis and mesothelioma treatment options depend on the size of the tumor, the stage of cancer, potential surgical removal of any tumor, amount of fluid in the chest or abdomen, overall health and age of patient, specific type of mesothelioma cancer cell and whether cancerous cells are found anywhere else in the body.

The mesothelioma prognosis is determined through physical examination and the results of a number of medical tests designed to evaluate the rare asbestos cancer. Once a mesothelioma prognosis is finally determined, then treating this aggressive and rare cancer can begin. Early diagnosis and treatment are most important in looking for a favorable mesothelioma prognosis.

Since mesothelioma is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, the statistics for one to five year survival are usually unreliable.

The two most common types of mesothelioma are peritoneal (abdominal) mesothelioma and pleural (lung) mesothelioma, with pleural mesothelioma being the most common. Peritoneal mesothelioma can be difficult to stage because of its rarity. The initial symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are subtle and often ignored resulting in the cancer being more advanced when it is finally diagnosed causing it to be difficult to stage. However, because it is the most common of the mesothelioma cancers, pleural mesothelioma has multiple staging systems.

Unfortunately, patients who have been diagnosed with peritoneal or pleural mesothelioma are often advised of a grim mesothelioma prognosis, one which can often be less than one year survival expectancy from the time of diagnosis. Of course every patient is so different requires a different mesothelioma treatment plan and as a result of the individuality of each patient, an accurate mesothelioma prognosis must be individualized by your physician.

The mesothelioma prognosis has several important factors such as the patient’s overall health at the time of diagnosis, exact type of mesothelioma tumor, size of the mesothelioma tumor and precise location of the mesothelioma tumor. Normally mesothelioma is located near the vital organs such as the heart and lungs which can cause severe consequences if the cancerous tumors begin to press on these vital organs. It is important to remember that the healthier a patient is going in to treatment for malignant mesothelioma then the patient generally responds better to treatment and has a greater chance of a prolonged survival.

After properly being diagnosed with mesothelioma and a mesothelioma prognosis is made, the doctor and patient will discuss treatment options. Because there is currently no known cure for mesothelioma, treatment options are designed to relieve symptoms, try to prevent metastasis and to prolong life while maintaining an acceptable quality of life.

Mesothelioma Litigation: An Overview

Mesothelioma is a deadly and rare form of cancer that develops from exposure to asbestos. The inhaling of the highly toxic asbestos is the major reason of the mesothelioma. The ingested particle of the asbestos develops the cancerous or the malignant cells in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the cell structure that covers and surrounds various internal organs.

The person who has developed mesothelioma through exposure to asbestos can seek the legal assistance for the compensation. Mesothelioma litigation has developed in large numbers. This is because some companies allow employees to work with asbestos - the cause for this deadliest disease - without informing the workers. For the wrongful deaths of the people who have developed mesothelioma by these irresponsible firms, claims can be filed for legal compensation for the sufferer or for the benefit of the family. This is referred to as mesothelioma litigation.

Low levels of protection and the lack of effort to control the exposure of humans to asbestos has developed mesothelioma litigation, inciting damage. The unawareness of the workers of the asbestos exposure causes them to delay the necessary medical treatment. The treatment of mesothelioma is very expensive. One cannot pay for it in at their own expense. The person who has developed mesothelioma through exposure to asbestos can seek immediate legal assistance for maximum compensation.

A lawyer who has a good track record in dealing with these cases can help you in receiving the compensation money from the irresponsible asbestos-related companies. The compensation for the victims who have developed mesothelioma with the exposure of asbestos can be awarded millions of dollars as the payout. Mesothelioma litigation helps the person who has developed mesothelioma to receive a good and fair compensation amount from the firms that expose the asbestos. The money is intended for the fulfillment of basic needs, medical expenses, personal loss, and damages that happened due to the mesothelioma.

9/11 Impact On Mesothelioma: Researchers Worry

Researchers and experts are concerned about the possible impact of the 9/11 disaster on mesothelioma in the coming years and decades.

It is generally agreed that the large amounts of asbestos released during the 9/11 disaster will have a substantial impact on the number of new mesothelioma cases in the United States in years to come.

9/11 concerns over new mesothelioma cases are further complicated by the fact that it usually takes 20 to 40 years after asbestos exposure for mesothelioma cases to start developing. Currently there are about 3,500 mesothelioma cases being treated annually in the country.

And even where mesothelioma does occur, it is not known exactly how many of these patients will be actually treated because there is usually a large number who are misdiagnosed as having metastatic adenocarcinoma which is another different form of cancer. This could further worsen the impact of 9/11 on new mesothelioma cases over the next couple of decades.

Then there are the usual problems that hinder treatment of mesothelioma like the medical community not bothering to refer patients to centers where potentially curative treatment can be given because it is generally believed that the disease has no known cure. The truth is that although mesothelioma experts are far from having a cure for all patients, recent developments of more effective treatments including radical surgery and advanced radiotherapeutic modalities now offer much better odds for longer survival to patients suffering from mesothelioma.

Before 9/11, researchers had expected the number of new mesothelioma cases to peak in the next few years and probably begin to fall. More so because of the major asbestos control initiatives of the 1970s.

Mesothelioma Information Asbestos Cancer: Let's Inform the World

Mesothelioma is known to be produced by exposing yourself to asbestos during a long period of time. A period of time hundreds and thousands of mine and shipyard workers are exposed while they work hard. The first case of mesothelioma ever to be linked with asbestos remotes as early as the 1890s. Almost a full century passed until the first mesothelioma lawsuit was filed against asbestos manufacturers in the US.

Information Denial

Mesothelioma information and asbestos cancer information was practically refrained from workers causing them to get infected throughout the years without even knowing what was mesothelioma. Some asbestos producing companies even sent out memos about abstaining to inform their workers about the illness until they were already infected with mesothelioma.

It is no wonder why there are some many people now a day with pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lungs tissue, while peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdomen.

Mesothelioma Treatments

There is no known cure to mesothelioma cancer but doctors and scientists are making a huge effort to try and finding it. Currently there are various mesothelioma treatments but don't ultimately cure it.

Mesothelioma is a serious disease and serious attempt should be made to inform the American people about what is going on. Mesothelioma lawsuits have been filed and won by thousands of people infected. With the right mesothelioma information, asbestos manufactures shouldn't have to pay billions in compensation for mesothelioma infected workers.

Preventable Crisis

This is an illness that can be 100% preventable and many companies knew that. The only thing is that they were too busy focusing in making billions out of blood money that they forgot to care about their workers.

Mesothelioma Diagnosis Options

Mesothelioma cancer is a very rare and dangerous type of diseases that could attack the human bodies in some regions such as pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. The pleura are the lining of lungs, the peritoneum is the lining of internal organs in the abdomen and the pericardium is the sac that contains the heart and the great vessels.

The diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer is very difficult because the presence of two reasons, the first reason is that the symptoms of malignant mesothelioma cancer take a very long time to be observed, it may take at least 35 years to appear.

The second reason is the fact of being the symptoms of malignant mesothelioma is very similar to other common types of diseases that not dangerous at all. In some cases, the patient shows no any symptoms which make it very difficult to discover mesothelioma in the right time. The early discovering of malignant mesothelioma cancer may help in the treatment process.

The options of mesothelioma diagnosis can be by using radiations such as x-rays, the using of CT scans, the using of Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI, and other methods that could be useful in the treatment process.

To know what the most effective method to get your mesothelioma case diagnosed, you must consult your doctor. As I mentioned above, the early discovering of mesothelioma cancer would be very helpful to get mesothelioma treated. So, let your doctor to test the tissue that surrounds the lungs to decide what the best strategy for treatment is.

Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer involving mesothelial tissues of body organs usually lungs or abdominal. It is often caused by exposure to asbestos. However, there are 30-50% of patients without any history of asbestos exposure. People who have received asbestos exposure of as little as one or two months to very low doses are at risk of mesothelioma cancer. Even people who wash clothes of asbestos exposed people are at risk. A person exposed to asbestos could develop mesothelioma after 50 years of exposure.

People in the occupations such as construction jobs in shipyards, insulators, boilermakers, etc. are at the risk of contracting asbestos disease.

The 2 common types of mesothelioma are:

Pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) and Peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen organs).

The survival time for a patient with diffuse malignant mesothelioma is from 4 to 24 months from the observance of the symptoms. Mesothelioma is also difficult to diagnose.

The chance of recovery for a patient with mesothelioma depends on size and location of the cancer, age of the patient and his response to the treatment.

Presently, the treatment options for mesotheliomas are:

· Radiation therapy

· Chemotherapy

· Surgery and Photodynamic therapy

There is some evidence that provitamin A or beta-carotene may decrease the risk of mesothelioma.

Malignant Mesothelioma Diagnosis

The most critical form of mesothelioma is the malignant form. Known as malignant mesothelioma, the primary causal factor is asbestos infection. According to the US National Cancer Institute, "Malignant mesothelioma is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium)."

Mesothelioma can be classified into three types – pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma refers to a cancer of the lining of the lung (pleura), peritoneal mesothelioma refers to a cancer of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) lining, and pericardial mesothelioma is a cancer that occurs in the lining that surrounds the heart (pericardium). The subtypes of mesothelioma are of three basic types, one very aggressive, one least aggressive, and one lying between the two extremes.

Malignant mesothelioma can be diagnosed through several imaging techniques. These imaging techniques enable physicians to assess mesothelioma. Once mesothelioma is suspected, patients are advised to undergo several tests, like X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT) scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. The physician may also like to undertake special mesothelioma tests like thoracoscopy, peritoneoscopy and biopsy.

Learning about the stage of mesothelioma is a critical factor that helps physicians to decide the treatment plan. If the cancer is confined to the pleura, mesothelioma is considered localized. If the cancer spreads beyond the pleura and to other parts of the body such as the lungs, abdominal cavity, lymph nodes and the chest wall, mesothelioma is considered to be in an advanced stage.

The oft used and the oldest system for determining the stages of mesothelioma is the Butchart System. The Butchart System is based on the extent of the primary tumor mass available in a patient. This system divides mesothelioma into four stages. The TNM system, a slightly advanced system over the Butchart System, determines staging through variables of tumor in mass and the spread, the lymph node involvement and metastasis. However, the latest system is known as the Brigham System, where staging is done as per the respectability and lymph node involvement. In spite of such modern techniques, a definitive diagnosis of mesothelioma still remains possible through fluid diagnosis and tissue biopsy.

Malignant Mesothelioma At a Glance

Malignant mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. It is a rare form of cancer that most frequently arises from the cells lining the sacs of the chest (the pleura) or the abdomen (the peritoneum). Malignant mesothelioma is closely linked to exposure to asbestos - a natural fiber that was once used in manufacturing a wide variety of industrial and household products. Workers involved in asbestos mining, milling and manufacturing are at the greatest risk for developing malignant mesothelioma. Also at high risk are shipyard workers, workers in the heating and construction industries, and other tradespeople. Family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing malignant mesothelioma, and possibly other asbestos related diseases as well. Cases of malignant mesothelioma have even included people whose only exposure was breathing the air through ventilation systems.

Although reported incidence rates have increased in the past 20 years, malignant mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer. Between 1973 and 1984, there has been a threefold increase in the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma in Caucasian males. From 1980 to the late 1990s, the death rate from malignant mesothelioma in the USA increased from 2,000 per year to 3,000, with men four times more likely to acquire it than women. The actual rates may be even higher however, since it is possible that many cases of malignant mesothelioma are misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma of the lung, which is difficult to differentiate from mesothelioma.

The average age of diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma is 60. The average survival time varies from 4 to 18 months, and death is usually due to infection or respiratory failure from the progression of the mesothelioma.

Latest Mesothelioma Research: Combination Improves Survival

The following mesothelioma research findings were reported in a recent issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Mesothelioma researchers have reported that combining Tomudex (raltitrexed) and Platinol (cisplatin) has shown amazing results in the improved survival of patients suffering from the rare Malignant pleural mesothelioma which is caused by habitual exposure to asbestos.

According to the mesothelioma research findings reported in the journal, the combination of the two treatments dramatically improves the survival of patients compared to the use of Platinol alone.

These mesothelioma research findings emerged from a randomized phase III trial.

Patients suffering from this rare mesothelioma usually experience shortness of breath, cough, pain, fatigue and loss of appetite. This new mesothelioma research findings are all the more encouraging because this type of cancer has proved to be resistant to most therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy on its' own and even when combined with radiation.

What usually complicates matters further is the fact that usually patients are not aware of the fact that they are suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma until the disease has already progressed to a very advanced stage where treatment with surgery or radiation is no longer a viable option.

That is why the identification of treatment that can improve survival as well as quality of life in patients, as this mesothelioma research promises, is so significant.

How do People Get Mesothelioma?

The cancer of the mesothelium is known as Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma damages the tissues and other organs of the body and can also affect the cells and spread throughout the body. Asbestos is the main factor for this disease. People in factories or offices who work under the asbestos roof or people who manufacture asbestos sheets or asbestos related products tend to get this disease. Around 70-80 percent cases for mesothelioma are because of asbestos. However, there are some cases where the person with mesotheliioma has no exposure to asbestos. The tiny particles or asbestos dust float in the air, and when they are inhaled, it leads to health problems. Exposure to asbestos also increases the possibility of lung cancer, and other types of cancers. Smoking as well as exposure to asbestos could lead to cancer in the air passageways.

Before the Internet era it was hard to find any information on mesothelioma. Now, with the advent of Internet, information about the causes, diagnosis, treatments etc can be gained with a click of a mouse. Around 2000 mesothelioma cases are diagnosed in the United States alone every year. In the past 20 years mesothelioma cases have shot up. Mesothilioma mainly affects men rather than women.

Some symptoms of mesothelioma are shortness of breath and chest pain. Mesothelioma is treated by surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy etc.
